The headline says

Fair play to ya Mark boy!

No, genuinely. That’s a dressing room, a stand and a set of floodlights.

On the average Irish wage, it’s also the equivalent of 35 cent.

So not thanks a million, Mark.

More like thanks 0.0007% of a million.

Some context

On 29 September 2026, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan announced €150,000 for three GAA clubs in west Waterford, as RTÉ News reported. They are the three clubs nearest Strancally Castle, the 19th-century house on the Blackwater that the couple bought in August. Each club gets €50,000, paid as €25,000 a year over two years.

ClubGetsFor
Shamrocks (Knockanore)€50,000An upgrade of the dressing rooms
Tallow€50,000Coaching and games, a 100-seat stand, and tarmac for the community walkway
Lismore€50,000Floodlights, pitch-side fencing and a walkway, all at the planning stage

In their statement, the couple called the GAA the heart of Irish communities and said that, as new Waterford residents, they were proud to back their local clubs. For the clubs it is a lot of money. Tallow’s treasurer told RTÉ it is the biggest single donation in the club’s 139 years, and Shamrocks has about 200 members in a parish of around 750 people.

How the equaliser works

The equaliser works out what share of his money the €150,000 is, then takes the same share of yours. There are two ways to compare, and each sets like against like.

Your salary against his yearly gain

Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t really have a salary. Meta pays him a base salary of $1 a year, with no bonus and no share awards. Nearly all of his wealth is his stake in Meta, so the closest thing he has to income is how much richer he gets in a year.

On the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, his wealth went from about $207.7 billion at the start of 2025 to $233.6 billion at the end of it. That is a gain of $25.9 billion in a year, or €23.1 billion. The €150,000 is 1 part in 153,823 of that.

€54,438 ÷ 153,823 = €0.35

That’s what someone on the average Irish salary, about €54,438 a year before tax, would give in the same proportion.

Your net worth against his

Your net worth is everything you own (your home, savings, pension and car) less everything you owe. His is about $257 billion, or €229 billion. The €150,000 is 1 part in 1,526,355 of it.

€256,900 ÷ 1,526,355 = €0.17

€256,900 is the median Irish household’s net wealth, so half of households have more and half have less.

Making it back

At last year’s pace, his wealth grows by about €731 a second, day and night. That is why the equaliser says he made the €150,000 back in under 4 minutes.

Worth knowing

  • It’s paper wealth. His fortune is mostly Meta shares, and it moves with the share price. A bad day on the stock market can take billions off it, and a good one adds them back. The figures here are a snapshot from 2 October 2026.
  • The yearly gain is last year’s. His wealth grew by $25.9 billion in 2025, and $23.4 billion more so far in 2026. Some years it falls.
  • Estimates differ. Bloomberg and Forbes each work out billionaires’ wealth their own way, and their figures don’t match. This page uses Bloomberg’s.
  • His dollars are converted at one rate. We use the ECB’s rate for 2 October 2026, $1.1225 to the euro.
  • The castle’s price hasn’t been published. The couple bought Strancally Castle off the market, and the sale wasn’t on the Property Price Register at the time of the donation.

None of this makes the donation any less real for the three clubs. The equaliser only shows how big €150,000 is next to the money behind it.
